We often see people skimping on a PC case so they can allocate that budget to other system components. While this isn't a bad idea at all (there are only certain situations where a high-end case is necessary), the case is one component we shouldn't skimp on if we want to have upgrade options later.
Indeed, Choosing a suitable PC case that meets your needs is very important. After purchasing their PC, many people eventually regret having built a pretty decent computer in a very basic case, and now we'll find out why. Even so, here's our article on the best cheap gaming boxes.
Our selection of the best computer cases
As you can see, since this is an external case, choosing a case isn't too complicated, as it doesn't involve analyzing as many factors as with other hardware components. However, if you want us to make it even easier for you, here's our selection of some of the best options on the market.

Factors to consider
Form factor
The form factor or dimensions are very important. In fact, it will determine whether we can accommodate our motherboard or not. Therefore, consider the type of motherboard you have or want to purchase and buy the appropriate case. If it's a smaller form factor motherboard, don't worry; they usually have brackets to properly anchor the motherboard, but not the other way around. If the motherboard is larger, it won't fit properly.
You should keep in mind that there are large, medium, small (micro-ATX), and very small (mini-ITX) cases. In addition to what we call cases or towers, there are also barebones, which have a more square appearance but reduce interior space.
- Full or large: They support two 2mm radiators or one 140mm radiator, three 280mm radiators or one 3mm radiator, etc. They also support E-ATX or XL-ATX motherboards, and also provide support for smaller motherboards up to mini-ITX. Of course, the number of bays will be maximum.
- Mid or medium: These are the most typical or widespread. They can accommodate ATX motherboards, but their bays and radiators have less capacity to hold drives.
- Micro-ATX: As their name suggests, they only support micro-ATX and mini-ITX motherboards, and their space is extremely limited.
- Mini-ITX: They are even smaller than the previous ones, and only support mini-ITX boards, with the same limitations as the previous one.
Aside from these formats, there are also some less unusual ones, such as the miniDTX, which is for frontal placement, something more classic than the vertical one.
So, before making a decision, ask yourself, "What motherboard should I install?" The answer will tell you what type of case you need.
Air flow
The box or tower It not only acts as a physical support for the PC hardware, but also the case that will house the additional cooling systems. These elements maintain a good temperature inside the case. This allows the CPU and graphics card fans to draw in cooler air, so when it passes through the heatsinks, it will have greater cooling power than if it were to blow in hot air. For proper drainage, it's important that it accommodates at least two fans: one at the rear or side and one at the front.
Typically, the one at the rear or side is responsible for expelling air from the tower, while the one at the front brings cold air in. This ensures a proper cooling cycle.
That's why you should take into account some factors when purchasing your new box, such as:
- How many 120mm/140mm fans can be mounted in the case?
- Is it compatible with top fans?
- What about the side panel? Is there enough room to mount an additional fan to supply cooling air to the graphics card?
- How many fans can be mounted on the front panel?
Heatsink support
What is the maximum height that the case supports for a CPU cooler? Let's say you want to buy a dual-fan CPU cooler and want to install two fans (one on each heatsink). Let's also say you buy a RAM kit with a tall heatsink.
Sometimes, one of the aforementioned CPU coolers is located directly above the RAM slot. This means you need to raise the CPU cooler slightly, and therefore, you need a case that can adjust both the RAM and CPU cooler height without touching the front panel.
Water cooling
If you want to overclock, whatever the element, you will most likely be thinking about purchasing a liquid cooling system. for your rig. The same applies if you're a gamer who spends long hours pushing your PC, or if you're simply into modding. So, when choosing a case, ask yourself these questions: Does the case support a 240mm radiator? A 360mm radiator? A 420mm radiator? Does it have the optimal space to mount the radiator?
Graphics card size
Let's say you were looking to buy a GTX 1080Ti and chose the EVGA GTX 1080Ti FTW3. That card is 299mm long (longer than some 1080Ti models) and may not fit in some cases due to the hard drive bay. This means you'll need to make sure that particular model will fit your case or that your case is compatible with a graphics card of that length.
Cable management
Does the case have any space for routing cables along the rear panel? Does the case have ample cable management holes?
Be careful with small, barebones cases; cables take up a lot of space inside, although with the new SATA versions, this is no longer the case with IDE ATA, but they are also obstacles to good cooling.
Therefore, choose boxes with large volumes, especially if your cooling needs are high.
Storage space
How many hard drives/SSDs can you fit in the case? Does it have dedicated storage for them? Some cases have very limited space for hard drives and optical drives, etc. So, if you're going to install more of these drives or plan to upgrade in the future, avoid buying cases with just the number of bays you need now.
Tomorrow you may need to add a new hard drive, a new optical drive, a card reader, or any device that fits in a 2.5” or 3.5” bay.
Front panel connectors
Many cases have multiple front ports, which can be a great way to avoid having to reach all the way to the back of the case to connect something. For example, connecting an external hard drive or flash drive will be much more convenient.
Typically, the ports we find on the front are USB and sound ports, to connect headphones, microphones, etc. So we must ask ourselves: How many USB ports on the front panel does the case have?It supports USB 3.0/3.1/3.2 on the front panel port?
Aesthetic appearance
If you're a modding enthusiast or, on the other hand, want something more discreet because you'll be using it in an office or workplace, you should check out the photos provided by the manufacturers. This doesn't affect performance or compatibility, but it does make it aesthetically appealing to the end user.
Some cases have front doors that hide the optical drives, and they even have a lock to prevent anyone from opening them, which can be practical in some cases. You'll also find cases with colored LED lights or RGB LED effects to give it a more special touch.
Others also come with transparencies, with methacrylate so you can see the interior, and other details. Some even include screws or fasteners that don't require a screwdriver to open them, etc. Any of these details may be of interest to you when making your final decision.
Conclusion
There are actually many things to consider when purchasing a computer case. Some cases even offer a sound-dampening feature that will make the overall system quieter under load. In short, the case you really need to buy is the one that suits your needs.
By the way, don't forget to pay attention to the brand either. Although it may seem silly since it's just the element that "wraps" your hardware, it isn't. There are certain brands that pay more attention to every detail and use quality materials, while others simply offer you just the bare minimum to house your hardware.
Some high-quality brands include Thermaltake, Corsair, Tacens, Lian Li, Silverstone, Cooler Master, NZXT, Fractal, etc. If you choose a case from these brands and follow our guidelines, your purchase will be a sure success.
